Top 10 Things to Do in Blagaj, Bosnia (2025 Guide)
Blagaj is one of Bosnia & Herzegovina's best-kept secrets — a village where a 16th-century Dervish monastery clings to a cliff above an impossibly clear river spring, restaurants hang over the turquoise water, and time moves slower. Here are the top 10 things you absolutely must do when visiting Blagaj.
Visit the Blagaj Tekke (Dervish Monastery)
The iconic Tekke is built directly into the limestone cliffs above the Buna spring. This 16th-century Sufi monastery is one of the most photographed sites in Bosnia and a UNESCO candidate. You can tour the interior, see the prayer hall, and stand at the very source of the Buna river. Dress modestly — head coverings are available at the entrance.
Entry fee: ~3 BAM · Open: Daily 8am–8pm (summer)
Lunch or Coffee on the Buna River Terrace
Blagaj's riverside restaurants extend directly over the river on wooden platforms. Order trout caught fresh from the Buna, traditional Bosnian čevapi, or just a Turkish coffee while watching the clear spring water flow beneath you. Vrelo and Restoran Fatima are local favourites — arrive early in summer as they fill quickly.
Kayak or Boat the Buna River
The Buna river is exceptionally clear — visibility of several metres in places. Several operators offer kayak rentals and guided boat tours from the spring down to the river mouth. It's an ideal activity for families and takes about 1–2 hours depending on route. Book through local adventure companies near the Tekke car park.
Explore the Old Blagaj Fortress (Stjepan Grad)
Above the village sits a medieval fortress with panoramic views across the Buna valley. The hike takes about 30–45 minutes from the village and rewards you with one of the best viewpoints in Herzegovina. The fortress dates back to the medieval Bosnian kingdom and offers dramatic photo opportunities.
Swim in the Buna Spring Pool
Just downstream from the Tekke, the Buna river widens into a natural pool area where locals swim in summer. The water stays cool year-round (around 11°C) so it's refreshing even on the hottest Herzegovina days. A perfect spot to cool off after visiting the Tekke.
Day Trip to Mostar (20 minutes away)
Blagaj makes an excellent base for visiting Mostar — the city with the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge) is just 12km away. Combine a morning in Mostar's old town with an afternoon in Blagaj for the perfect Herzegovina day. Many visitors actually prefer staying in Blagaj due to its tranquility.
Try Traditional Bosnian Food
Don't leave without trying these local dishes: ćevapi (grilled minced meat in flatbread), begova čorba (bey's soup with vegetables and veal), burek (flaky pastry filled with meat or cheese), bosanski lonac (slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew), and baklava for dessert with Bosnian coffee.
Visit the Emen Canyon
A short drive from Blagaj, the Emen Canyon is a spectacular gorge carved by the Bregava river. Popular for hiking, cliff jumping (in designated spots), and photography. The canyon is easily combined with a visit to Stolac — an ancient Herzegovinian town worth exploring.
Attend a Local Cultural Event
Blagaj hosts traditional festivals throughout summer, including Dervish ceremonies, folk music evenings, and local food markets. Check the village notice board or ask your accommodation host about events during your stay. These offer authentic insight into Herzegovinian culture that no tourist attraction can replicate.
Watch the Sunset from the Buna Valley
Blagaj's valley position means stunning golden-hour light reflecting off the river and limestone cliffs. Find a spot near the old bridge on the river road, or sit on the terrace of any riverside restaurant, and enjoy the sunset over the Tekke. It's the single most magical moment the village offers — and it's completely free.
How to Get to Blagaj
Blagaj is located 12km south of Mostar. From Mostar, you can take a taxi (15–20 mins, ~20 BAM), rent a car, or join an organised day tour. There is no direct bus service from Mostar city centre to Blagaj village. From Sarajevo, it's approximately 2.5 hours by car or bus to Mostar, then taxi to Blagaj.
