Best Restaurants in Blagaj, Bosnia — Where to Eat in 2025

January 2025·5 min read·By visitblagaj.ba

Eating in Blagaj is one of the great pleasures of Herzegovina travel. The restaurants here have something most places in the world cannot offer — tables built directly over a crystal-clear turquoise river, with a 500-year-old monastery visible from your seat. Here's our honest guide to the best ones.

Our Top Restaurant Picks

🌊 Vrelo Restaurant

Best overall River terrace Trout speciality Family-friendly

Vrelo (meaning "spring" in Bosnian) sits right at the source of the Buna, with tables extending over the water on wooden platforms. It's the most scenic spot in Blagaj and arguably in all of Herzegovina. The grilled trout, caught from the river just metres away, is exceptional — simply prepared with local herbs and lemon. The lamb dishes are also outstanding.

The service is warm and the menu covers traditional Bosnian dishes alongside some international options for less adventurous eaters. Expect to wait for a table on summer weekends — reservations are strongly recommended.

Main course: 18–35 BAM Suitable for: groups, families, couples

☕ Kafić Buna

Best for coffee Casual River view Light meals

If Vrelo is the grand dining experience, Kafić Buna is where locals go for their morning coffee and afternoon pita. A relaxed café-restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river bend, it serves excellent Bosnian coffee (kafa), fresh pita pastries, grilled meat platters and cold drinks. Prices are noticeably lower than the more tourist-facing restaurants.

This is the spot to sit for two hours, watch the river, and have absolutely no reason to rush anywhere. The burek here — flaky pastry filled with minced meat — is particularly good.

Snack + coffee: 5–12 BAM Suitable for: solo travellers, couples, locals

🍖 Restoran Fatima

Best traditional food River view Bosnian cuisine Large groups

Restoran Fatima is where you go when you want authentic home-style Herzegovinian cooking rather than a polished tourist menu. The bosanski lonac — a traditional slow-cooked pot of layered meat, vegetables and spices — is some of the best in the region. Portions are enormous and prices are very fair.

The restaurant also caters well for larger groups and has a covered terrace for cooler evenings. The staff are friendly and patient with visitors who need help navigating the menu.

Main course: 14–28 BAM Suitable for: groups, those seeking authentic cuisine

What to Order in Blagaj

Booking tip: In July and August, the riverside restaurants fill up by noon. Book online through visitblagaj.ba or call ahead. If you arrive without a reservation, try arriving at opening time (noon) or after 3pm when the lunch rush clears.

Price Guide

Blagaj is very affordable by Western European standards. A full three-course meal with drinks typically costs 20–40 BAM per person (~10–20€). Budget travellers can eat well — burek or ćevapi with a drink comes to around 7–10 BAM.

Prices at the most scenic river-view spots are slightly higher than cafés set back from the water, but still very reasonable. Tipping ~10% is appreciated but not mandatory.
